The current law states that tyres must have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tyre, around its whole circumference. Drivers with tyres that fail to meet these standards face a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per illegal tyre.
Vehicles fitted with tyres that do not have the legal amount of tread pose a danger to the driver of that vehicle and to other road users. Stopping distances are increased, cornering ability is reduced and the likelihood of aquaplaning is increased, all as a result of illegal tread depth.
Tyre Pressure levels are crucial not only to the longevity of your tyres, but to your personal safety when using your car. Cars with incorrect Tyre Pressure can be subject to decreased grip and increased braking distances. By using your car with incorrect tyre pressures, you are also increasing the likelihood of damaging your tyres and wheels. Most cars will have a different recommended tyre pressure level for the front tyres and the back tyres.
The correct pressure is important both for safety and for a long tyre life.
Incorrect tyre pressure can reduce the life of your tyre by 20% and add to your fuel consumption every year by up to a full tank of petrol.
So what is the answer? How do you ensure that you have the correct pressure in your tyres?
Tyre and car manufacturers recommend that you check your tyre pressure every two weeks, or certainly before you go on a long journey. However, I am sure we have all experienced the frustration of going to the local petrol station to check our tyre pressures, only to find that the tyre inflation machine is out of order.
In a recent survey for www.Tyresafe.org, 56.8% of those people surveyed said that when they called into a petrol station to check their tyres, the air machine was not working! I am sure you have experienced this at some time or another.
Furthermore the number of people who actually check their tyres regularly is very small. Again from a survey undertaken by Tyresafe, when asked when was the last time that the tyres were checked, 55.7% said in the last week, 32.6% said in the last month and 11% said never! That is an alarming statistic. Regular checks on your tyre pressure could save your life, it will save you money and also reduce carbon emissions thus doing your bit to save the planet.
Introducing a new local service.
For the majority of people, finding time to check their tyres is difficult, however, a simple solution can be found.
Introducing the visiting tyre pressure service. A visit twice a month from our trained operative will ensure that your vehicles tyres are maintained at the correct manufacturers pressure. Furthermore, a check on the legal depth of your tread will be undertaken, plus a general check on the condition and wear of the tyres will be performed each visit. This service can be carried out even if you are not with your vehicle, however you will need to be in attendance if the spare tyre is also to be checked.
How much will this cost?
A monthly charge of £4 per vehicle for two visits per month.
How do you know the correct tyre pressure for my vehicle?
Using the vehicles registration number (obtained when you sign up for this service), the correct pressure based on the type of tyre and load can be ascertained. A record of the correct tyre pressure for each customer will be kept to ensure that each visit will be accurate and save time.
How do I sign up for your service?
